Creators: Tell Congress to Oppose Copyright Registration Fee Increases

I am an independent creator who is part of the photography and visual arts community, writing to ask you to urge the U.S. Copyright Office to reconsider the proposed increases of my copyright registration fees, which are scheduled to increase over 50%.  
 
Copyright registration is critically important to creators like me. Registration is essential to my ability to effectively protect and enforce my rights when my work is infringed. However, for photographers, illustrators, and other visual artists like me, registration presents a particular challenge because we often create hundreds or thousands of new works each year. So, registration fees are not an occasional expense, Instead, they represent a significant and recurring cost of protecting my work.
 
The fee increases proposed by the U.S. Copyright Office would make that burden greater. For individual creators like me, higher fees will mean making difficult decisions about which works I can afford to register and may mean that I must register substantially fewer works or stopping registration altogether.
 
At a time when creative works can be copied, distributed, scraped, and used at unprecedented scale, particularly in the age of generative AI technologies, this is not the time to make copyright registration less accessible to independent creators like me.
 
I respectfully ask that you urge the U.S. Copyright Office to take another look at the impact the proposed fee increases will have on photographers, illustrators, visual artists, and other independent creators, and to reconsider the proposed increases before they take effect on November 12.
