Urge your federal elected officials to support the inclusion of $11.581 billion for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s programs in the FY 2026 Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies appropriations bill.

I respectfully urge you to support a robust investment of $11.581 billion for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the FY 2026 Labor-HHS appropriations bill. This funding is essential to sustain effective prevention programs that protect the health and well-being of communities across the country.

I also strongly oppose any efforts to reduce CDC funding, dismantle critical programs or centers, or attach harmful policy riders to appropriations legislation. Such actions would undermine public health infrastructure and jeopardize the safety of every state and community.

Recent administrative decisions have hindered CDC’s ability to deliver its most effective prevention programs nationwide, limiting our capacity to protect patient safety. The claw-back of over $11 billion in previously appropriated funds and the reorganization of CDC have resulted in the loss of thousands of essential positions and the weakening of programs addressing infectious diseases and occupational health and safety.

Nearly 80% of the CDC’s domestic budget supports public health and prevention activities, including efforts to prevent healthcare-associated infections and combat antimicrobial resistance. These initiatives are carried out in partnership with state, tribal, local, and territorial health departments, national public health organizations, and academic institutions.

CDC plays a critical role in detecting and responding to disease outbreaks both domestically and globally. In the U.S. alone, at least 2.8 million antimicrobial-resistant infections occur annually, resulting in over 35,000 deaths. Additionally, C. difficile infections —often linked to antimicrobial misuse—cause more than 48,000 deaths each year. CDC leads efforts to reduce these infections and operates vital surveillance systems such as the National Healthcare Safety Network, the Advanced Molecular Detection program, and the National Wastewater Surveillance System.

The estimated national cost of treating antimicrobial-resistant infections exceeds $5.6 billion annually. Any reduction in CDC funding could lead to increased infection rates, higher healthcare costs, and greater loss of life.

For these reasons, I urge you to ensure that at least $11.581 billion is allocated to the CDC in the FY 2026 appropriations. Thank you for your attention to this critical matter and for your continued support of public health.
