Protect Your Access to Care: Why We Need Your Support Against PBMs
As your pharmacist, I do not discuss how difficult it has become to keep my pharmacy open and continue to provide care to my patients. A huge player in healthcare is the pharmacy benefits
managers (PBMs).
PBMs are middlemen between insurers, pharmacies, and drug
manufacturers, and their role can sometimes complicate the process of getting
the medications you need. They can influence which drugs are covered, how much
you pay out of pocket, and even which pharmacies you can use.
More and more, PBMs are impacting your access to medications
and the cost of your prescriptions. It feels like they are trying to force
community pharmacies out of business by, among other things, reimbursing
pharmacies far less than what we pay for medications. For example: If I pay $10
to purchase a drug, then the PBM reimburses me $5 to dispense, well you can see
the problem. They are also coming back later and “clawing back” money from me
with no explanation.
There are many other things they are doing which are making
it difficult to keep our doors open. But there is hope. There is a bill in the legislature (SB
966) that is attempting to save your pharmacies by holding PBMs accountable and
banning these unfair business practices.

While this is not easy for me, I must ask for your help.
Please reach out to your Assemblymember TODAY and urge them to support SB 966.
Thank you.
