Can you afford to pay someone else's water bill?  I can't!!

The House just passed HB92 and now is YOUR chance to be a Housing Hero!  We are all looking for ways to help lower housing costs right now, and NOT passing on resident utility bills is a great start!  It only makes sense to have water bills follow all other utilities in their methods for collection.  Outstanding balances should be recovered from those who contract for the service and not left to property owners.  

SB 118 will likely reduce the amount of overall utility collections.  If utility companies no longer have a back stop, they will shut off services early, contact residents for work out plans earlier, and be able to mitigate smaller balances owed.  This will be better for everyone.

Being hit with unexpected bills or liens on my property for a service I didn’t contract or utilize makes it difficult to keep my rents reasonable and my deposits low. Be a Housing Hero!

It is high time we restore personal responsibility in Ohio SB118 does just that.  Everyone agrees the current system of holding property owners responsible for resident utility bills is an unfair and ridiculous practice.  Everyone I speak to about this shakes their head and can't understand it.  The Ohio House just passed a companion bill and we are now counting on YOU to vote YES to  SB118.

Bills are bills, whether those are car payments, credit cards, cell phones, or utility bills- they should all have the same collection procedure. 

SB118 will not require plumbing refits, costly sub-metering, or drastic changes to properties.  They encourage better customer account management. When utilities no longer rely on property owners as a financial backstop for bills they did not incur or control, they will have a stronger incentive to monitor accounts earlier and intervene sooner when balances begin to rise.

That shift can benefit everyone involved. Rather than allowing unpaid balances to accumulate to $500 or even $1,000 before action is taken, utilities will be more likely to address problems early. Earlier intervention creates opportunities for residents to establish manageable payment plans and resolve issues before the situation becomes unworkable for anyone.

For housing providers, this reform restores a basic principle of fairness: property owners should not be held responsible for services they do not use and cannot control. For residents, it encourages earlier communication and more reasonable solutions before bills spiral out of reach. 

Housing providers have shouldered this unfair burden long enough.  It's time to stand with hardworking, independent housing providers and show Ohio you care about keeping rental costs low.  Support SB118 and support small businesses.

Stop this ridiculous bill collecting practice

I am encouraging you vote YES on SB 118, sponsored by Senator Lang,  when it comes to a floor vote.   It only makes sense to have utility bills paid for by those who use the services.  Water, sewer, and trash services should not be treated differently than other utilities.  SB118 enforces years of ignored law making outstanding unpaid balances for water, sewer, and disposal services recoverable from those who contract for the service and not left to property owners to be payers of last resort.
