Call on Congress for Dairy Support in Farm Bill

Dairy Business Support Means a Stronger Economy, Secure Food Supply

International marketplace volatility, a severe labor shortage, rising operations and ingredients costs, and supply chain disruptions continue to challenge U.S. dairy farmers and dairy processors, and the long-term stability of the $753 billion U.S. dairy industry - and, in turn, the safety and security of our nation's food supply.

A new Farm Bill can deliver the support needed to address these challenges, and I'm writing today to urge you to take action now.

Our industry supports increased funding for federal nutrition programs that address hunger - and ensure American families have access to safe, healthy dairy products every day.

I also ask for your support for $36 million in annual authorization for Dairy Business Innovation Initiatives, delivering the small-dollar investments needed to help business like mine modernize facilities and processes, develop value-added products and diversify revenue streams, and reach emerging global markets. DBII programs support innovation through technical assistance, market analysis, research and development, education, and critical, competitive business grants.

As you consider Farm Bill priorities, please also work to expand the existing Healthy Fluid Milk Incentives Projects program to include yogurt and cheese offerings, authorizing $20 million over five years in funding; to mandate biennial cost of production surveys to ensure accurate make allowances in federal orders; continue the Dairy Forward Pricing Program through 2029; adjust to the Dairy Products Donation Program to allow for broader participation; and include language establishing a formal definition for natural cheese.

I recognize that there are significant differences between the Senate and House versions of the Farm Bill, but I encourage you to find bipartisan solutions to move quickly on bill passage. Thank you for your consideration and public service.
