AMGA is calling on our members to contact their Representative and Senators to share what Medicaid means for their patients and urge them to preserve and restore access to coverage and care.&nbsp;
Mid-terms elections will be held on Nov. 3, and it is critical that policymakers understand the value of Medicaid to voters in their community. After elections, Medicaid policies from the One Big Beautiful Bill Act are set to take effect:&nbsp;
<ul>
<li>Dec. 31, 2026 - More Frequent Eligibility Redeterminations: States will conduct eligibility redeterminations every 6 months for Medicaid expansion adults. &nbsp;</li>
<li>Jan. 1, 2027 – Medicaid Work Requirements: Condition eligibility for those ages 19-64 on working or participating in qualifying activities for at least 80 hours per month. &nbsp;</li>
<ul>
<li>ALSO shifts burden to states and providers to define and determine “medical frailty” for work requirement exemption. &nbsp;</li>
</ul>
</ul>
An estimated 6 million people will become uninsured by 2034 as a result of these changes to Medicaid according to the <a href="https://www.cbo.gov/system/files/2025-10/PL-119-21-Medicaid%20_0.pdf" target="_self">Congressional Budget Office</a>. &nbsp;
Tell Congress to take action to prevent harmful changes that could force Americans to lose their Medicaid coverage, increase their healthcare costs or delay their care.&nbsp;

 Join AMGA and fellow organizations in the Medicaid Day of Action! 

On behalf of [XYZ Organization] of [City, State] – a [multispecialty medical group/health system] that employs [number] physicians/providers, and [number] total employees, and treats more than [number] patients every year – I urge you to consider the importance of Medicaid to patients in our community ahead of the November midterm election and before Medicaid work requirements and increased eligibility redeterminations are enacted in 2027, forcing an estimated 6 million Americans to lose their access to care.

[XYZ organization] implores you to support policies that:

• Provide states more time, resources and flexibility to implement new Medicaid requirements and make sure their systems are ready before anyone loses coverage.
• Remove unnecessary paperwork and reporting barriers that could cause people who qualify for Medicaid—including people with serious health needs—to lose their coverage.
• Preserve states’ current flexibility to fund Medicaid and pay healthcare providers to sustain access for vulnerable patients, rural communities and underserved areas.

For millions of patients, Medicaid is the only pathway to primary care, lifesaving treatments, behavioral health services, and long-term care. It is a critical source of funding for hospitals, community health centers, and other safety-net providers, which rely on the program to serve these patients. AMGA conducted a survey of member medical groups and systems of care to examine how these cuts included in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (H.R. 1) will impact patient access to care. Among respondents:

      •	38% of respondents stated they are currently cutting patient services in anticipation of cuts, and 68% are planning cuts in the future. 
      •	21% of respondents stated they would close or restructure facilities.
      •	30% would limit pediatric care.
      •	37% would reduce maternity services
      •	64% anticipate employee layoffs or furloughs. 
      •	Among rural facilities specifically, 20% expect closure or restructuring.

Federal Medicaid changes are now beginning to take effect, including new work requirements and funding changes that are likely to result in reduced benefits and services. As these changes move forward, Congress must protect Medicaid for the millions of Americans who rely on the program for access to coverage and care.
