Unlocking Housing Choices (UHC) is Denver’s latest policy initiative to bring more types of homes to the city to fit the needs of Denverites. By allowing more house-scale multifamily housing (duplexes, triplexes, backyard homes, etc.), UHC will create naturally more attainable housing in our city. Picture your grandmother being able to downsize in the neighborhood she loves, nurses finding reasonable homes near work, young families buying smaller starter homes, and more. This is the vision, and UHC is the start.

I am writing to express my support for a strong Unlocking Housing Choices policy that enables more diverse and attainable homes to be built in Denver neighborhoods. 

Denver’s housing costs have gotten out of reach for a lot of us, and our neighborhoods don’t offer enough options to match how people want to live and what they can afford. Legalizing more middle housing –- things like duplexes, fourplexes, backyard homes, and cottage clusters — in areas where detached single-unit homes are currently the only option will make Denver more livable.

Small homes on small lots allow new construction to fit right into our existing neighborhoods at low-to-mid price points people can afford. Starter homes can come back to our city, young families can become homeowners, and empty-nesters can downsize while staying in their neighborhood. Denver will be the kind of city for people’s full life cycle, inclusive to every generation. 

Our city deserves more housing options to match our needs and budgets. Supporting a strong Unlocking Housing Choices policy will keep Denver accessible and desirable to everyone. Show Denverites you care by supporting a strong policy now!
