More than 40% of all micromobility trips in Denver are taken by riders on the income-qualified Access program. Expanding sidewalk riding penalties to these riders – including potential suspension from the program – will disproportionately impact Denverites with the fewest transportation options. Furthermore, Veo is already doing their part by educating, warning, and fining riders, and as a result sidewalk riding isdown 20%. The City’s proposal undermines that progress and conflicts with commitments to Vision Zero and equity by putting riders at risk.

Tell the Mayor & City Council: Planned crackdown on sidewalk riding will cause more harm than good

Cracking down on scooter sidewalk riding citywide without ensuring riders have safe places to ride will put lives at risk, raises serious equity concerns, and could eliminate an essential and climate-friendly transportation option that many low-income residents depend on every day. I urge you to pause the sidewalk-riding enforcement expansion until these issues are addressed.

Many streets throughout the City lack safe infrastructure for people riding scooters and bikes. Just telling people to not ride on the sidewalk makes no sense in these situations - where are people supposed to go when the street is not safe?

The City’s proposal conflicts with our commitments to Vision Zero and equity by putting riders at risk, and potentially eliminating a critical, affordable transportation option for those with the fewest alternatives. Please pause the planned expansion and work with communities and Veo on a more targeted, data-driven, and equitable approach that preserves affordable transportation access while ensuring safe streets for all.

I also urge you to bring the same urgency to building safe places to ride that you are bringing to enforcement. The only proven way to reduce sidewalk riding is to give riders a safe alternative.
