10 million voters said no to cruelty. Congress didn't listen.
Millions of Americans voted to end one of the cruelest practices in factory farming: gestation crates. These two-foot-by-seven-foot metal cages trap pregnant pigs for virtually their entire lives, unable to turn around, lie down comfortably, or engage in any natural behavior. California passed Prop 12. Massachusetts passed Question 3. Voters did the work.
Now Congress wants to erase it at a national level.
The Food and National Security Act of 2026 (H.R. 7567) just passed the House of Representatives. Buried inside it is a provision critics have named the "Save Our Bacon Act," and that name tells you everything you need to know about who it's designed to protect. It would nullify those state laws entirely, overriding the democratic will of more than 10 million voters and handing a sweeping victory to factory-farming corporations that have spent years and millions of dollars trying to undo what those voters decided.
This isn't just about pigs, though it should be enough. It's about whether corporations can use federal legislation to cancel your vote when they don't like the outcome. It's about who gets to decide what happens in your state. And it's about the kind of food system we're willing to accept - one where pregnant animals spend their entire lives in a cage too small to turn around, or one where basic decency has a place at the table.
The bill now moves to the Senate. That means there is still time.
Senators can strip this provision before it becomes law. They can also restore the animal protections that were quietly left out of the bill entirely, measures to end the export of American horses to slaughter, crack down on dogfighting and cockfighting, and block taxpayer money from subsidizing the fur industry. These aren't radical asks. They have broad, bipartisan support. They were simply abandoned.

Tell the Senate: Reject the Farm Bill Rollback

I am writing to urge you to oppose the "Save Our Bacon Act" (H.R. 4673) provision currently embedded in the Food and National Security Act of 2026 (H.R. 7567), and to advocate for the inclusion of meaningful animal welfare protections before this bill becomes law.

On April 30, the U.S. House passed this legislation by a vote of 224 to 20. Among its most troubling provisions is a measure that would nullify state laws like California's Proposition 12 and Massachusetts' Question 3, ballot measures that more than 10 million Americans voted for to ban the use of gestation crates in pork production. These crates confine pregnant pigs to spaces so small they cannot turn around, for virtually the entirety of their lives.

This is not simply an animal welfare issue. It is a question of democratic integrity. 

When the federal government overrides the will of state voters on matters they have decided through legitimate democratic processes, it sets a dangerous precedent. It also rewards the largest industrial factory farming corporations, including foreign-owned conglomerates like China's Smithfield Foods, at the expense of American farmers who have already invested in more humane systems to comply with these laws.

I also urge you to restore the animal protection measures that were stripped from this legislation, including provisions to end the export of American horses to slaughter, strengthen enforcement against dogfighting and cockfighting, and prevent taxpayer subsidies to the mink fur industry. These are not partisan issues. They have broad, bipartisan public support and deserve to remain a part of any comprehensive farm bill.

The Senate has an opportunity to correct what the House got wrong. 

I respectfully ask you to remove the "Save Our Bacon Act" from this bill and to support the restoration of commonsense animal protections. The voters of this country have made their values clear. I hope you will honor them.
