I’m writing to you as a member of a coalition that is led by members of the Jewish, Muslim, Interfaith, Union, Education, and Civil Rights community to urge you to refrain from adopting legislation or signing any Executive Order that would codify the IHRA Definition. The IHRA definition of antisemitism, which conflates legitimate criticism of Zionism or Israel with anti-semitism has been widely criticized by Holocaust scholars, civil rights groups, free speech defenders, and even the original drafter, who warned against its misuse to silence political criticism of the State of Israel.

Codifying IHRA is a dangerous step that threatens political speech; the IHRA definition   has already been weaponized against both Jewish and Palestinian community members, educators, students, workers, and all people who are speaking out against Israeli war crimes and  our government’s complicity therein 

New Jersey should not prioritize repressive measures over real protections for vulnerable minority communities.

We need real safety, not censorship. Real justice, not political theater. Stop the criminalization of speech and rise to protect our communities with actionable solutions.
