• Improves healthcare efficiency: Reducing bureaucratic delays allows blood centers to respond more quickly to community needs, potentially saving lives and reducing healthcare costs.
• Balances safety and innovation: Modernizing regulations maintains safety standards while enabling blood centers to adopt new technologies and expand services more efficiently, benefiting both donors and patients.

Support Reforms to Streamline Blood Center Licensure

Blood centers obtain a license from the FDA to collect, process, and distribute blood products. Blood Centers recognize and support the need for licensure requirements; however, blood centers are experiencing significant challenges when opening new fixed-site locations and/or adding automated collections to existing locations utilizing existing already approved procedures and laboratories. While collection of whole blood does not require additional licensure for a new location, blood centers currently may have to wait 12 months or more for blood and blood components collected by apheresis to be fully licensed by FDA.

I am writing to ask that Congress work with the Administration to provide much needed relief from these bureaucratic requirements that add no additional safeguards for patients or donors by modernizing licensure requirements to eliminate duplicative, unnecessary, or otherwise a hinderances to streamline the process. 

Currently, blood centers can use approved equipment for a temporary site such as on a mobile site but if that same equipment was to be moved to a fixed site it would have to go through the process all again. Not only does this limit usable resources, but it also puts up barriers to blood centers without providing any extra safety or value to the donors or patients.
