I’m writing today as a deeply concerned constituent to strongly urge you to veto A4652 / S3507, a bill that poses a serious threat to the constitutional rights of New Jersey residents.

This legislation would create broad and vague legal grounds to criminalize peaceful protest. By allowing authorities to penalize demonstrations involving just four or more people if their actions are deemed to “offend the sensibilities” of others, the bill introduces a subjective and dangerous standard that could easily be abused. It opens the door to targeting marginalized communities and silencing dissent.

Organizers and participants could face disorderly conduct charges simply for exercising their First Amendment rights. This is especially troubling for communities that have historically relied on peaceful protest to advocate for justice and equity. If enacted, this bill would set a dangerous precedent not only in New Jersey, but nationwide, threatening the foundational freedoms of speech and assembly.

As Governor, you have a critical responsibility to uphold our constitutional rights. I urge you in the strongest terms to veto S3507 / A4652 and stand with the people of New Jersey in defending our democracy.
