<p>The Trump Administration has moved forward with an aggressive trade agenda, imposing tariffs on all U.S. trading partners, including those that the U.S. hardwood industry relies upon to keep mills operating and employees on the job. Other nations are beginning to respond. While some are open to negotiations, others are imposing retaliatory tariffs that will directly impact hardwood companies.  China today issued a 34% tariff on all U.S. products.</p>

Tariffs Are Impacting US Hardwood Companies

The U.S. Hardwood industry is the largest supplier, producer, and exporter of hardwood logs and lumber in the world and is a significant supplier, producer, and exporter of hardwood veneer.  However, our U.S-based processing and manufacturing base as well as our  global and domestic markets are in immediate danger of decimation due to the impacts of the imposition of global tariffs. Recent history backs up our fears.  

•	Tariffs imposed on China in 2018 resulted in retaliatory tariffs that devastated the U.S. Hardwood industry, costing the U.S. Hardwood industry an average of over $747 million per year in lost sales since tariffs were removed in 2020.  
•	Since the 2018 trade dispute began, the total loss of just lumber sales to China is over $4.69 billion.  U.S. Hardwoods had a 34% share of the Chinese market in 2017, we now have a 23% share in a smaller market.  
•	Once export market supply chains are lost, they are nearly impossible to reestablish. Access to China, the U.S. Hardwood industry’s largest market has essentially been cut in half. We have not recovered and remain a fragile, but feisty, industry sector.
•	The April 2, 2025, announcement regarding the global imposition of tariffs is a replay of 2018 and  has already brought the U.S. hardwood industry to a screeching halt.
•	Purchases of raw materials from landowners and logging companies have been put on hold, mills have ceased operations and shipments both domestic and international have been cancelled.

The U.S. hardwood industry is global.  We need domestic markets and international markets to survive.  If the current situation continues, the entire industry infrastructure will collapse. Please work with your legislative peers and the White House to address this situation now.
