I am reaching out as a constituent concerned about human rights and democracy in Pakistan.

In 2022, Pakistan’s democratically elected Prime Minister, Imran Khan, was deposed in a legislative coup. Since the coup, Pakistan’s undemocratically elected government backed by its military, has consolidated its power by cracking down on democratic institutions, the press, and dissidents, often resorting to extortion, torture, and murder to squash dissent. 

In November 2024, the situation worsened when Pakistani security forces opened fire on peaceful pro-democracy demonstrators in Islamabad killing hundreds and wounding thousands.

In response, Congressman Bill Huizenga (R-MI) and Congresswoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove (D-CA) have introduced the Pakistan Freedom and Accountability Act (H.R. 5271). A followup to the overwhelmingly successful H.Res.901, this legislation will give Pakistani government officials real consequences for their persecution of political opponents, suppression of democracy, and disregard for human rights.

Myself and fellow Pakistani-American leaders in your district are worried about Pakistan and its future as a democracy. Cosponsoring this bill will send a strong message to Pakistan that continuing down the path of totalitarianism will lead to consequences for their government and its officials.
