Gov. Hochul and Legislators: Protect New Yorkers!

I’m reaching out to you as a constituent and a New Yorker who is deeply concerned about the impact of the federal budget reconciliation bill on our community. The massive cuts to healthcare and other social services, alongside tax cuts for the wealthy and huge investments in ICE and immigrant detention, will have far-reaching consequences. I’m urging you to call for a special session now to pass legislation to defend our immigrant neighbors, and protect poor and working-class New Yorkers from life-threatening service cuts by raising taxes on ultra-wealthy individuals and corporations. 

There is no reason for New York to slash healthcare, nutrition assistance and other vital programs. New York can afford to raise revenue from the wealthiest individuals and corporations to make up for lost federal funding. Especially since the ultra-wealthy will see their federal tax bills go down, New York can and should raise taxes on the super-rich in order to protect our healthcare system, social safety net and economy.

New York also must take urgent action to protect our immigrant neighbors from ICE. The tens of billions that the budget reconciliation put toward ICE and new detention facilities shows that the federal government intends to escalate their attacks on immigrants. Albany must use all the tools at our disposal to push back and protect our communities — we need to pass New York for All and Dignity Not Detention, now. 

Show everyday New Yorkers that you will stand up for us in the face of these attacks. We cannot wait until next year for relief — people’s lives and health are at risk now.
