Hunger is at a 20-year high in the Carolinas – your voice is urgently needed!

The State of Hunger in the Carolinas

Hunger in the Carolinas has reached its highest point in nearly 20 years. More than 2.2 million people face food insecurity across the Carolinas — including over 600,000 children. Pantries, meal sites, and delivery programs like Meals on Wheels are seeing more families seek food assistance than at the peak of the pandemic, when so many people lost jobs and income.

Year after year, Food Banks show up when our state faces a crisis – providing meals and hope in the wake of Hurricane Helene in 2024, and during the SNAP disruption in 2025 that impacted 2 million families across the Carolinas. In the worst of times, Food Banks show up for our neighbors.

At the same time, state and federal funding for hunger relief programs and farmer partnerships has been dramatically reduced. That doesn’t just make it harder for Food Banks to feed our neighbors – it is also a critical loss of revenue for farmers already struggling with the rising cost of fuel, feed, fertilizer, and labor.

The need for state-level support for hunger relief has never been greater.

Farmers, retailers, and hunger relief organizations from across the state are coming together to educate lawmakers about the importance of investing in Food Banks and agricultural partnerships to fight hunger in the Carolinas. Our communities face near-unprecedented rates of food insecurity – and our farmers are uniquely positioned to help meet the rising need.

Join us in advocating for the resources needed to make hunger-free communities a possibility for our neighbors in the Carolinas.
