Tell Congress: Be a Guardian of Medicaid!

As your constituent and someone who cares deeply about people with disabilities, I’m writing to urge you to oppose the federal proposals that would drastically cut Medicaid and the Essential Plan. These changes would have devastating consequences for people with disabilities, their families, and our entire healthcare system here in New York.
New York State estimates that these proposals would result in more than $11 billion in funding losses every year. This would force major changes to who qualifies for services, what services are covered, and how programs are funded.
Here’s what’s at stake:
• Up to 1.2 million New Yorkers could lose their Medicaid or Essential Plan coverage.
• More than half of Essential Plan funding would be cut, threatening a lifeline for low-income individuals and families.
• People with disabilities are especially at risk. Nearly all services for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) are funded by Medicaid. These cuts could wipe out critical supports they rely on every day.
• New work and eligibility requirements would create huge administrative burdens, causing more people to lose coverage and costing the state an additional $500 million to implement.
• Even though New York is constitutionally required to cover these populations, the state would have to pick up the cost - an extra $2.7 billion annually - and would be penalized with a $1 billion federal funding reduction for doing the right thing. 
Please don’t mistake silence in these federal proposals as a sign that disability services are safe. They are not.
People with disabilities, their families, and the organizations that support them are terrified of what these changes will mean. I urge you to fight against these harmful cuts and protect Medicaid, the Essential Plan, and the vital services New Yorkers need.
