The architects of these systems know the race to build superintelligent AI is reckless. They've warned us about the existential risks themselves, repeatedly. But each argues they can't slow down because they need to beat the others and geopolitical adversaries.
We're not asking anyone to stop alone. Just to say: if the others pause, I will too.
In September 2025, we protested at Google DeepMind with the same demand. Demis Hassabis said he'd be open to it — but that international coordination was the key bottleneck. Public commitments from lab leaders are what create the conditions for that coordination. Now it's Elon, Sam, and Dario's turn.
In February 2026, Dario Amodei's Anthropic quietly dropped its commitment to pause development if its own AI became too dangerous. Holden Karnofsky, former CEO of Open Philanthropy and now at Anthropic, admitted there was "enormous pressure" to downplay risks, because triggering a pause would hurt the company. Their solution? Remove the commitment entirely.
They claim they are building safely for the benefit of humanity. It's time they prove it.

Tell Your Representatives: Stop the AI Race

I'm writing to urge you to take action on the race to build superintelligent AI systems. The CEOs of the leading AI companies such as Anthropic, OpenAI, and xAI have warned the public that their technology poses existential risks. However, none of them will slow down, because each fears falling behind the others.

This is the kind of collective action Congress exists to solve. I urge you to support legislation that would require frontier AI developers to make enforceable commitments to pause if their systems are found to pose catastrophic or existential risks, establish independent federal oversight with the authority to trigger those pauses, and direct the administration to pursue international coordination on frontier AI development.

Anthropic recently removed its own voluntary commitment to pause if its AI became too dangerous. We cannot rely on voluntary pledges from companies under enormous competitive pressure. Congressional action is needed to create the conditions for responsible coordination.
