Denver’s very first Vision Zero Action Plan called for the use of automated enforcement as part of a comprehensive speed management program, with a target implementation date of 2019. Hundreds of people have been killed in preventable traffic crashes on Denver’s streets since then, and it is well past time for Denver to fulfill this commitment.
The plan further called for modifications to City code “to reinvest revenue generated from automated enforcement into Safe Routes to School and Vision Zero projects and programs.” This action was also supposed to be initiated by 2019.
Better late than never, but now the Mayor needs City Council approval to establish the new speed camera program and the Council Health and Safety Committee will be discussing the proposed ordinance tomorrow, Wednesday October 14. To make sure they know how critical this issue is, send a message to the Mayor and Council today, urging them to commit to investing the speed camera revenues into safe streets improvements.

Slow down, Mayor–let’s make sure those speeding ticket revenues go to fixing the problem

Now that the City is prioritizing this strategy, it is critical that leadership also prioritize the use of the speed camera revenue for Safe Routes to School and Vision Zero projects and programs.

I remain in support of Denver’s Vision Zero Action Plan and am pleased to see the City rolling out automated speed enforcement cameras. As you work to establish this program, please commit to reinvesting revenues into infrastructure improvements that make our streets safer for all users.
