The State of Ohio Tax Reform Committee Wants to Tax Housing Providers MORE.....
In what might be an unprecedented move, all county officials have united to endorse four polices to provide relief to property taxpayers. These are AT THE STATE LEVEL, so if you own, or plan to own rentals in Ohio, these will affect you.
The Governor's "Property Tax Reform Working Group" just released final recommendations for your legislators to consider and vote on.
These include:
- Eliminating the non-business credit. This is the credit that LOWERS your property taxes on 1-4 unit rentals. It will be gone, replaced by a higher credit that only owner-occupants get. More taxes on your rentals, in a market when your property taxes, insurance, and labor costs are already at a historic high.
- An income tax break for RENTERS, meant to offset the property taxes, which they don't pay, YOU do. Think that's fine, that you'll just raise the rent to cover the new taxes and the state will refund the difference to them? Good luck- as you know, rents are stagnant right now and vacancies are up. This money should be returned to the property owners who pay the taxes, not to the renters who don't.
- LLC Disclosure provisions- Remember the Corporate Transparency Act, that we were all angry about because it put too much private info into the hands of bureaucrats that we didn't trust to protect it? This is like that, but only applies to property owners. New name, same problem: it will put property owners, especially older housing providers, at risk for fraud and scams.
This can't happen, and you can help. Send a message to elected officials today to let them know right from the start these are NOT the best solutions for tax reform.
